JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) - Lot 226
JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Fairyland. Enchanted Garden. Poster project for the 1889 World's Fair, gouache titled above and below. 1889. Height. 84cm; Width. 61cm Chips, folds. Produced for the 1889 World's Fair, this poster project for the Jardin Enchanté, 31, avenue Rapp, illustrates Chéret's favorite fairy-tale and spectacular world. A radiant female figure soars above a backdrop of orientalist architecture, illuminated by fireworks. This preparatory gouache brilliantly embodies the festive, dreamlike aesthetic of fin-de-siècle imagination. The final poster was printed by Imprimerie Chaix - Jules Chéret's former printing house, taken over in 1881 by publisher Alphonse Chaix, but with Chéret retaining artistic direction. The work was distributed on a large scale, at a time when urban leisure activities were booming: theaters, balls, popular attractions. It was part of an essential body of work that helped legitimize the poster as an artistic medium in its own right. We would like to thank Pierre Blanchet, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and included it in his archives. A copy of this poster is kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark: /12148/cb398364067).
