C. PORTIER (19th century) - Lot 217
C. PORTIER (19th century) Bougival Causeway, 1841 Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left. On the passe-partout, two glued pieces of paper bear the handwritten inscription in ink: "I am approaching my 71st year, my eyes are weakening a little, my memory has weakened a little because I still remember not having anything to refuse you". Height. 50cm; Width. 64cm. The île de la Chaussée, dear to the Impressionist painters, also known as île de la Grenouillère or île de Croissy, is an island in the Seine, about 2.5 kilometers long, located between Bougival and Rueil-Malmaison on the left bank of the Seine and Croissy sur Seine on the right bank. In the 18th century, Ile de Croissy-sur-Seine (now the famous Ile de la Grenouillère) and Ile de la Chaussée were merged to form a single island, but kept their respective names. In our drawing, we can see the quay that extended the Château de la Chaussée quay, demolished in 1830. In the distance, on the hillsides, the aqueduct of Louveciennes, or aqueduc de Marly, built under Louis XIV, was part of the hydraulic system designed to supply water from the Seine to the gardens of the Château de Marly and the park of the Château de Versailles.
