JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES (BORN 1939) - Lot 330
JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES (BORN 1939) Reclining Woman Painting on handmade paper and shards of mirror applications, signed and dated 83 lower right. 38 x 54 cm. Unframed. Exhibition. F.I.A.C., Galeria del Naviglio, 1983. José de Guimaraes, a Portuguese-born painter and sculptor, is a major figure in contemporary art. He visited Paris on several occasions, discovering avant-garde painters such as Picasso and the Fauves. In 1967, he was deeply influenced by African art during his first visit to Angola. He continued to travel thereafter, notably to Asia and Mexico. Also a collector, his art is characterized by this syncretism between all the cultures he discovers. Pierre Restany even used the term "transcultural nomadism". José de Guimaraes has developed a personal artistic universe combining signage and symbolism. His works are distinguished by their use of cutting and fragmentation. As early as 1982, he added shiny materials such as shards of mirror or glass. Today, he is one of Portugal's most awarded artists, and his works are exhibited in museums around the world.
