BAT VASE
Gilded metal, ovoid in shape, decorated with bas-relief and high-relief depictions of bats flying over Paris, startled by the arrival of electricity.
Signed, located, and dated 1899.
Height: 41.5 cm.
Slight wear to the gilding.
This rare piece with a golden patina perfectly illustrates the Art Nouveau fascination with this nocturnal animal and the still-recent arrival of the “Electricity Fairy” in modern cities. Interest in bats is also evident in the literature of the time, notably Robert de Montesquiou’s collection of poems published in 1892 and titled “Les chauves-souris” (The Bats).
