Rare set of two clappers (idiophone musical instruments)
In wood and metal. Each made from a thick, monoxyle wood plank (one in walnut, one in fruit), with a hollowed grip for one and a grip made from a wide metal half-ring. On each side, an iron latch pivots and strikes nail or screw heads, producing a sonorous clacking sound.
Provence, early 20th century
Hs: 26 and 30.5 cm
These clappers, called "ténèbres", could be used by letter carriers who announced themselves in this way. Also known as "tarabasca", the clapper was used during mass at the offertory.
