*PAIR OF MALE KAMIK - Lot 309
*PAIR OF MALE KAMIK ESKIMO, GREENLAND. Bearded seal skins (Eripnarhus barbares). Patina of age patina. 54 x 35 x30 cm (on base). Early 20th century. Provenance. Ex private collection, Netherlands. Acquired from Hugo Bregeau, Nantes. Rare pair of men's Kamik, or overboots, used for walking in the extreme conditions of the Arctic winter. Made of seal skins for the upper part and walrus skins for the lower part, Kamik are as much indicators of rank, gender and origin as they are useful protective gear. The vertical decoration here is an indicator of gender: men generally wear vertical motifs, while women wear horizontal ones. This negative decoration is made from a piece of dark gray sealskin cut into a line of squares and embedded in a piece of blond sealskin. The whole is carefully sewn together sinews and specific sewing methods to make the assembly watertight. Kamik manufacture is a women's craft.
