EXTREMELY RARE MORRIS COLUMN, PARIS
Hexagonal cast-iron base, sheet-metal shaft, zinc upper section comprising a dome with six lunettes and a hexagonal canopy. A door provided access to the Parisian basement. The lunettes provided ventilation.
Marked in relief on the base "Grados, constructeur-ornemaniste 112 Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, Paris" and "Morris et fils Imprimeurs, 64, rue Amelot, Paris".
Second half of the 19th century.
Height. 600cm approx.
Point added.
In 1868, printer Richard-Gabriel Morris built the famous poster columns that bear his name. Over time, they have been replaced and modernized. As a result, original models are very rare. As far as we know, the only original example in an urban setting is on rue de Paris in Charenton, and serves as a sign for the Théâtre des deux rives. As for our example, it was installed under the metro at Barbès-Rochechouart station, from where it was removed to install an escalator.
Provenance: Barbès-Rochechouart metro station, Paris.
