VACLAV BOSTIK (1913-2005) Untitled white rectangle, 1990 Pas - Lot 170
VACLAV BOSTIK (1913-2005) Untitled white rectangle, 1990 Pastel, signed and dated 90 lower center. 59.5 x 51 cm. Slightly warped paper. Expert: Agnès Sevestre-Barbé A major figure in 20th-century Czech art, Václav Boštík began with sensitive figurative painting before evolving, from the 1950s, towards luminous, introspective abstraction. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he was one of the founding members of UB 12, a group of modernist artists created in 1960 in opposition to official dogma. His formally rigorous work explores color as a source of light and spiritual vibration. At the same time, he worked as a restorer, notably in the Episcopal chapel in Litoměřice. Boštík's silent, universal pictorial language places him among the great Central European abstractionists.
