Willy Ronis is famous for his views of picturesque Paris, which he described as "lost Paris", particularly for his much-reprinted work Belleville-Ménilmontant. The Cour rue des Envierges print probably comes from this series, in which other courtyards and tree-lined streets were photographed at the same time: "Cour rue Piat", "rue Levert", "Rue de la villette"... Awarded the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1979 and the Prix Nadar in 1981, he is one of the most important exponents of French humanist photography. In 1953, along with Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Izis, he was invited to New York's MoMA for the exhibition Five French Photographers.
His work is preserved at the Médiathèque du patrimoine photographique.
