SUITE OF FOUR PEDESTAL TABLES FROM THE RESTAURANT DROUANT, PARIS Wood, the engraved circular top, standing on four tapered wooden legs, the square brass and laminate base. c. 1960. Adjustable height. The highest. 77 cm x diam. 70 cm. Wear to the trays. PROVENANCE. Restaurant Drouant, 16-18, rue Gaillon, 2nd arrondissement, Paris. The bar-tabac founded by the Alsatian Charles Drouant in 1880 became at the turn of the century a popular restaurant of the Parisian high society for the tasting of oysters. Since 1914, on the first Tuesday of each month, it has been the venue for the Goncourt Prize juries and, since 1926, for the Renaudot Prize, those of the Renaudot prize. At the time of the prize-giving, the whole of Paris accompanied by a cloud of journalists invades the place.
