WORLD EXHIBITION, PARIS 1900. PAIR OF FILANZANES, MALAGASY. Wood and metal, the seat in leather. Dimensions. 297 x 45 cm for one; 304 x 38 cm for the other. Many filanzanes (chairs with four carriers) paraded in front of the Madagascar pavilion at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, then a French colony governed by Governor General Joseph Gallieni (1849-1916), future military governor of Paris.
