UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION, PARIS 1889. BELL OF... - Lot 112 - Lucien Paris
UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION, PARIS 1889. BELL OF TABLE - EIFFEL TOWER. Iron, marrying the shape of the Eiffel Tower, sheltering a bell. Under the base, engraved inscription Tour de 300 mètres, 1889, IXX9. 21 x 9 x 9 cm. Working condition. For the World's Fair of 1889, four majestic wooden pavilions designed by Stephen Sauvestre occupied the platform of the second floor. Each restaurant can accommodate up to 500 people. The kitchens are hung under the platform and until 1900, the restaurants were lit by gas. These four establishments were all demolished for the 1937 International Exhibition, when the second floor of the Tower was completely redeveloped. Only two restaurants were rebuilt, one on the site of the Russian restaurant, the other on the site of the Dutch restaurant. The architect Auguste Granet, who had married Gustave Eiffel's granddaughter, presided over their construction in the style of the 1930s.
