Né le 30 avril 1803, ce professionnel très estimé de l'administration pénitentiaire, comptera parmi les personnages du XIXe siècle convaincus que l'éducation et l'alphabétisation sont essentiels pour aider à la réinsertion des détenus, dans une époque où l'idée de seule répression demeurait majoritaire.
En 1834, il est nommé deuxième commis au greffe de la maison d'arrêt pour dettes, 70, rue de Clichy.
En 1842, il est nommé commis greffier, puis directeur en 1844. Il est chargé en 1848 de la surveillance, de la conservation et de la liquidation de cet établissement. En 1849, il est nommé greffier instituteur de la Maison Centrale d'Éducation Correctionnelle du Fort de Bicêtre.
En 1850, il est nommé directeur de remplacement.
En 1852, il assure un remplacement de commis rédacteur à l'Inspection Générale des Prisons.
En janvier 1853, il est nommé directeur au dépôt près la Préfecture, la Conciergerie, puis Directeur de la maison de justice : la Conciergerie.
En 1863, il est nommé Directeur de la Maison correctionnelle des Jeunes détenus, 143, rue de la Roquette.
En 1864, il est fait Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur par Napoléon III.
Il décède le 14 juin 1888.
Il est le père du compositeur et auteur dramatique Auguste L'Éveillé.
