LARGE NOMINATIVE PLATE OF THE PLACE OF THE... - Lot 395 - Lucien Paris
LARGE NOMINATIVE PLATE OF THE PLACE OF THE FABIEN COLONEL Enamelled iron, rectangular in shape, inscribed in white letters on a white background "Colonel Fabien Square", the pediment in a basket handle inscribed "19th stop", the blue and green frame. Circa 1930. 56.5 x 90 cm. PROVENANCE This plaque comes from the destruction of buildings in the square, famous for housing, since 1971, the headquarters of the French Communist Party, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The square corresponds to the old Pantin fence of the General Farmers' Wall, which took the name of the Combat fence, because of the animal fights that took place there in a huge arena from 1778 onwards. During the Battle of Paris in 1814, the fence was heroically defended by naval gunners, the National Guard and polytechnician students. In 1871, the barrier was the last retreat of the insurgents from the Paris Commune. It took its current name from a 1945 decree to pay tribute to Pierre Georges, known as "Colonel Fabien" or "Frédo", a communist and resistant militant (1919-1944).
