VICTOR BALTARD (1805-1874)
Poly-lobed rose for the roof console of the Halles Centrales de Paris pavilion. Openwork cast iron painted brown, with polylobé decoration. 1852-1870. Diam. 100 cm, thickness. 8 cm. PROVENANCE. Demolition site of the Halles Centrales de Paris, 1971. We disperse several elements of the interior and exterior decoration of the masterpiece created by the architect Victor Baltard from 1852 to 1870 for the Halles Centrales de Paris, as part of the commission given to him by Napoleon III. The pieces we present come from the 1971 demolition site, which remains one of the most scandalous heritage disasters of the 20th century. They have remained in the family of the demolition contractor to this day.
