EXTREMELY RARE MORRIS COLUMN, PARIS - Lot 333
EXTREMELY RARE MORRIS COLUMN, PARIS The hexagonal cast-iron base, the sheet-metal shaft, and the zinc upper section consisting of a dome featuring six lunettes and a hexagonal canopy. A door provided access to the Parisian underground. The lunettes provided ventilation for the basement. Engraved in relief on the base: “Grados, builder and ornamentalist, 112 Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, Paris” and “Morris & Sons, Printers, 64 Rue Amelot, Paris.” Second half of the 19th century. Height: approx. 600 cm. Spire added later. We owe the construction of these famous poster columns, which bear his name, to the printer Richard-Gabriel Morris in 1868. Over time, they have been replaced and modernized. It is therefore very rare to find original models. To our knowledge, the only original example in an urban setting is located on Rue de Paris in Charenton and serves as a sign for the Théâtre des Deux Rives. As for our specimen, it was originally located beneath the elevated metro line at the Barbès-Rochechouart station, from where it was removed to make way for the installation of an escalator. Provenance: Barbès-Rochechouart Metro Station, Paris. THIS LOT IS SOLD AS IS; IT MUST BE PICKED UP AT ISDES (45620) Please contact the firm for additional information regarding the lot’s storage location and pickup procedures.
