ALSACE POTASSE Enamelled plate for Scoralsace,... - Lot 378 - Lucien Paris
ALSACE POTASSE Enamelled plate for Scoralsace, potassium slag from Potasse d'Alsace. The history of potash in Alsace begins with an accidental discovery. While the Zuchers, textile manufacturers, were on the verge of bankruptcy, Amélie Zurcher had boreholes drilled to extract coal to supply the foundries. In 1904, during the first drilling, it was not coal that was discovered but very high quality potash. Alsatian potash was created for agriculture. It was in 1918 that the SCPA (Société commerciale des Potasses d'Alsace) was created with the famous stork as its emblem. From 1918 to 1922, the SCPA had major economic problems, bordering on bankruptcy. From 1922 to 1926, the post-war reconstruction and thanks to the management of new directors, success finally came. Format: oval, flat, single-sided. Process: stencil and screen printing. Illustration: stork facing right, Strasbourg Cathedral, by Hansi (1873-1951). Lettering: red and white, on a blue, white and green background. Enamel: Alsatian Enamelling, Strasbourg. 1950. 60 x 40 cm.
