"Fort des Halles" is the term used to designate the handlers who, as part of a corporation created under Louis IX, were responsible for transporting goods from the outside to the inside of the pavilions of the old Halles de Paris.
Dressed in a very characteristic work outfit, the strongmen wore the "coltin", a vast yellow leather hat with a very wide brim, fitted with a lead cap on the inside, which allowed them to support the heavy loads "coltinées" on their heads. They also wore, on the lapel of their blouse
of their blouse, a rectangular metal plate with the arms of Paris, indicating their title of "Fort" and sometimes stamped.
