THE BLUE TRAIN RESTAURANT It was during the 1900 Universal Exhibition that the Buffet de la gare de Lyon, the future "Train Bleu", was built. The work was entrusted to the architect Marius Toudoire, who had built the Clock Tower and the station's façade. The management of the Compagnie des chemins de fer wanted to create a gourmet stopover in a luxurious, modern and mythical setting. The Buffet de la gare was inaugurated in 1901 by the President of the Republic, Emile Loubet, and very quickly attracted high society and artists. In 1963, the buffet became "Le Train Bleu", in homage to the "Paris-Vintimille" line dating back to 1868, a legendary train that ran along the Mediterranean to serve the cities of the French Riviera. In 1972, some of the rooms of the "Train Bleu" were classified as historical monuments: the restaurant, the golden lounge and the Tunisian and Algerian lounges, as well as the passages and their decor. The reputation of the establishment is well known, as shown by the impressive list of personalities who have come and gone. The restaurant has been the setting for many film scenes including Nikita and Place Vendôme.
