LARGE NAMEPLATE OF THE PLACE DU COLONEL FABIEN,... - Lot 349 - Lucien Paris
LARGE NAMEPLATE OF THE PLACE DU COLONEL FABIEN, PARIS Enamelled iron, rectangular shape, with the inscription in white letters on a white background "Place du Colonel Fabien", the pediment in handle of basket carrying the inscription "19e arrt", the blue and green frame. Circa 1930. 56,5 x 90 cm. PROVENANCE. This plate comes from the destruction of buildings in the square, famous for housing, since 1971, the headquarters of the French Communist Party, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The square corresponds to the former barrier of Pantin of the wall of the Fermiers généraux which took the name of the Combat barrier, because of the animal fights which took place there in a gigantic arena from 1778. During the battle of Paris of Paris in 1814, the barrier was heroically defended by naval artillerymen, the National Guard and polytechnic students. In 1871, the barrier was the last entrenchment of the insurgents of the Paris Commune. It was given its current name by a decree in 1945 in 1945 to pay tribute to Pierre Georges, known as "Colonel Fabien" or "Frédo", a communist activist and Resistance fighter (1919-1944).
