ATTRIBUTED TO ANTOINE LANSON ROYAL TRAVEL AND WARDROBE BOX OF THE CLOTHES THAT BELONGED TO MARIE-JOSÈPHE DE SAXE, DAUPHINE OF FRANCE Wooden core, rectangular shape, sheathed in red brown morocco, gilded with small irons, decorated with friezes of foliage, underlined by fleur-de-lis. The lid, slightly curved, is decorated with a frieze of foliage, shells, palmettes and flowers, the spandrels with alternating crowned dolphins and fleur-de-lys surmounted by closed crowns. the centre, in a leafy oval, of the arms of Louis Ferdinand, Dauphin of France, and Marie-Josèphe de Saxe, Dauphine, surmounted by a closed crown and surmounting a shell. Cut brass keyhole, chased with flowers and birds, ormolu side handles, closing hooks, one of them with a fleurdelisé. Interior lined with original blue moire. Attributed to Antoine LANSON, bookbinder and sheath maker. He was also bookbinder and sheath maker for Marie-Antoinette, dauphin, then queen of France. He had a shop in rue Phélipeaux in Paris. Delivered to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe, dauphine, for her personal use. This is the only known example of this type of chest bearing the arms of the mother of Louis XVI. Circa 1760-1765. 29 x 62,5 x 40,8 cm. Some tears. Missing the piece of leather on the reverse side, which should have been marked by the sheath maker. A closing hook replaced.PROVENANCE. Marie-Josèphe de Saxe, Château de Versailles. Former collection of Étienne L'Éveillé, director of the Conciergerie prison, Paris. Remained in this last family until our days. Marie-Josèphe de Saxe (1731-1767), daughter of the King of Poland, was dauphine of France by her marriage at Versailles in 1747 to Louis Ferdinand of France (1729-1765), eldest son of King Louis XV. She gave birth to three future kings of France: In 1754, Louis-Auguste de France, Duke of Berry, the future Louis XVI, who married Marie-Antoinette in 1770, In 1755, Louis-Stanislas-Xavier de France, Count of Provence, future Louis XVIII, In 1757, Charles-Philippe de France, count of Artois, future Charles X. Although the coat of arms has been burned, the alternating presence of heraldic symbols representing a tower and the crowned dolphin suggest that this cassette belonged to Marie-Thérèse, dauphine of France. On the back of the bottom, mark LL framing a rooster (Antoine Lanson?). Probably dated circa 1754-1746.
