PAUL ELUARD. In April 1944: Paris was still breathing! Paris, Éditions de la Galerie Charpentier, 1945. In sheets, softbound. Jean Hugo (illustrator). In-4° in sheets under a filled cover. One of 998 copies on vellum pur fil numbered from 44 to 991 (n°556). Beautiful facsimile of the handwritten text of Paul Eluard's poem illustrating seven coloured gouaches by Jean Hugo, reproduced by stencil. Jean Hugo was introduced to Eluard by Valentine Hugo, his first wife. The painter remembers: "in April 1944, I was dazzled by the beauty of the streets of Paris. I made a series of gouaches that were shown to Eluard after the Liberation. The latter wrote this poem after them. A good copy, despite the wetness.
