JEAN-BAPTISTE-MICHEL RENOU DE CHAUVIGNÉ known... - Lot 165 - Lucien Paris
JEAN-BAPTISTE-MICHEL RENOU DE CHAUVIGNÉ known as JAILLOT (1710-1780). Critical, historical and topographical researches on the city of Paris of Paris from its known beginnings to the present, with the plan of each district. Paris, Le Boucher, 1782. 5 volumes in-8°. Bound in half calf, marbled boards, smooth spine decorated with gilt scrolls, flowers and fillets. Top edge gilt. Folding plans. Engraved folding plans, drawn after the work of the abbé Delagrive at the head of each part. Gathered on a single sheet, they will form, in 1777, a New plan of the city and suburbs of Paris. As the king's ordinary geographer and heir to the Jaillot map collection through his wife, Jean-Baptiste Michel Renou de Chevigné was among the first in France to attempt a historical topography of the city of Paris. "Jaillot reveals to us [...] his deepest wish: "to present to our eyes plans that show us [...] this city from century to century". "As if from then on the narrative was no longer enough and that it was necessary to see, and therefore represent, the city in order to understand its development, at the heart of a wider movement that led to the inclusion of maps and plans in numerous works that had previously totally ignored them" (Jean Boutier, p. 58). From the 1760s onwards, he therefore worked on the old plans of Paris, either from his personal collection, or from his merchant's collection, or from libraries: his corpus included about twenty plans, which he analysed critically, and from which he mainly retained those of Gomboust, Jouvin, Bullet, Delille, Roussel, but above all those of the Abbé Delagrive, his main source. "It is thanks to their meticulous examination, to their almost daily frequentation that this scholar exhumed the whole network of the streets of old Paris" (Jean Boutier, ibid.). He also took over from Jean de La Caille the idea of a presentation divided into quarters. Missing.
