PARIS] NICOLAS BEREY. Extremely rare large... - Lot 158 - Lucien Paris
PARIS] NICOLAS BEREY. Extremely rare large panoramic view of Paris. Paris, by Nic. Berey, illuminator to the king, at the end of the Pont Neuf, joining the Auguftins, to the two Globes, exudebat Nic. (Berey parifigis juxta Majus Coenobium PP. Auguftiniemfium, fub, interfigno vtriuique globi).(1669). View in 6 plates (sighted: 71,5 x 238 one approximately) enclosed. Engraving pasted formerly on strong paper. Scattered foxing. Very fine impression. Very good condition. Extremely rare panorama of Paris by Nicolas Berey and engraved by Noël Cochin. Engraved with etching and burin by Noël Cochin (Troyes 1622 - Venice 1695). Unknown condition with all the engraved arms and the names of the dignitaries modified. Includes a dedication "Dedicated to Messieurs les Prevosts des Marchands, et Eschevins de la ville de Paris", a table of notable places at lower right, 2 escutcheons (and 6 unstamped) and two reserves showing at top center the arms of France and Paris; on either side and from left to right, 10 escutcheons with engraved arms, representing "N. Boucot Receveur de la Ville (without arms), M. Simon Pietre Procureur du Roy en la Ville (with arms), M. Pierre Brigallien Conseiller du Roy (without arms), M. Eustache Faucrolles Eschevin (without arms), Monsieur le Mareschal d'Aumont, Gouvernr. De Paris, (with arms), M.re Daniel Voisin, conseiller du Roy ordinaire, Prevost des Marchands (sic) de Paris (without arms), M. Jean de Monhers, Eschevin (without arms), M. Jean Gaillard, Eschevin (without arms), M. Martin le Maire, Greffier (with arms). Dedication shield: "dedicated to MssieURS the Provosts of the Merchants and Aldermen of the City of Paris, by their very humble servant H. Jaliot 1669". In the foreground various scenes animate the view: walkers, horsemen, a character with a long view, another drawing, peasants, country scenes, travelers, hunting scene, water carrier, carriages... The engraving is surrounded by a frieze. The view takes up the scenographic device of those drawn by Mathieu Merian; but it is constructed from a different point of view, no longer the hills of Belleville or Montmartre but, further east, from "the eminence of Charonne, otherwise known as the meadow of La Rouë", like one of the views published by Martin Zeiller in 1655 in his "Topographia Galliae". On the left side, vignettes show "Le Roy, Notre Dame, La Bastille, the Château de Vincennes, the Louvre, Luxembourg, the Cardinal Palace". On the right side, vignettes show "The Duke of Anjou, the Sorbonne, the Hostel de Ville, the Place des Vosges, the Royal Palace, the Château des Thuilleries, the Château de Madrid". Below are four rectangular vignettes showing "Western aspect of the Pont Neuf, Eastern aspect of the City, Church of Notre Dame, Vüe de l'Hostel de Ville, Aspect of the Pont St Michel, quay des Augustins". In the lower part, on the left side, a "Summary description of the state, greatness and remarkable particularities of the City, Town and University of Paris" and, on the right side, a description in Latin. Small tears, missing in the summary description and the dedication on the left, restoration. Framed, underglaze. Nicolas Bérey was originally a seller of topographical views and maps. He seems to have opened a shop in 1639 and then joined Antoine de Fer to buy matrices from Christophe Tassin on the Quai des Augustins. He created the sign of the two globes. REFERENCES.
