AMPHORA WITH BLACK-FIGURE NECK
Ornamented on Side A with a scene depicting Herakles standing, fighting the crouching Amazon queen Hippolyta, wearing a crested helmet and armed with shield, cnemids and spear. On Side B, the scene depicts the goddess Athena Promachos standing on the left, wearing an aegis, wearing a crested helmet, brandishing a spear and armed with a shield adorned with a gorgoneion. The area below the handles is richly decorated with palmettes and lotus buds. Dots at the intersection of two curved lines feature stylized eyes. The neck is decorated with a highly original double chain of ivy leaves and geometric motifs. The base of the body is adorned with a frieze of lotus buds surmounted by a frieze of zigzag dots and radiating tongues. Black-glazed orange clay with red and white paint highlights.
Greek art, Attica, c. 530 - 520 B.C. Attributed to the Conservatori Class.
Visible restorations.
This rare group, represented by less than a dozen examples, owes its name to the eponymous amphora preserved in the Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome.
